2009 Course Handbook
MGK312: Introduction to Greek Theatre
This unit provides an introduction to Greek theatre from its conception to the present day. What is theatre? Where does it come from? What were the factors governing its conception? These and other themes will be discussed and analysed in the course with the aid of original works, especially selected for their linguistic, literary and cultural significance. Emphasis will be given to the presuppositions behind certain "universal" ideas of the theatre and to the relevance of these ideas to a society on the brink of internationalisation. Assessment will be based on two major assignments and class tests. There is also the possibility that a play may be staged at the end of the course by students.
