2009 Course Handbook

MUS209: Music Business

This course will focus on artist management for two main reasons; firstly, when considering music business management it is important to start with the perspective of the artist, and secondly, this is the best way to provide a comprehensive overview of the different facets that constitute the industry. The changing nature of the music business in the digital age is leading to the dominance of companies that are involved in all five key income streams that stem from an artist's career: a) live performance; b) merchandise; c) song publishing; d) the sale of recordings in different formats; e) sponsorship deals. The artist manager is the only other individual, besides the artist, who traditionally got to see and touch all the jigsaw puzzle pieces that fit together to create an artists' career. It is for this reason that companies that are becoming successful in the new digital version of the music business are embracing artist management philosophies and business models.
