2009 Course Handbook
MUS211: Digital Rhythms and Dance Cultures
This unit will examine the social, cultural and historical frameworks that have produced twentieth century electronic music and its attendant dance music subcultures. The subject begins with the very earliest forays into electronic music, and moves through key innovations in its history, such as musique concrète, electronic synthesis, digital music production and turntablism. Contextual analysis of specific genres, such as Hip-Hop, House, Techno and IDMs, which these technologies would both nurture and mobilise, are contextualised not only historically, but sociologically and philosophically via a diverse, interdisciplinary range of texts and readings.
