2009 Course Handbook

PSY104: Introduction to Psychology I

This unit introduces students to the discipline of psychology through a focus on the physiological bases of behaviour, perception, motivation, the nature of personality and psychopathology, and cross-cultural and indigenous psychology. The unit conveys information about substantive material, and assumptions of theory associated with the science and profession of psychology through lecture, tutorial / practical classes. A further important aim of the unit is to develop students competency in critical thinking and essay writing in psychology.

Evening students will be able to download lectures as MP3 files via the PSY104 website but must attend practical sessions.

Note: (a) Students who do not feel confident about their basic mathematical ability are advised to attempt STAT170 Introductory Statistics as a full-year unit rather than as a half-year unit. (b) The corequisite unit assumes that students will have a basic background in arithmetic and algebra; any students without this background are advised to remedy their deficiency by contacting the Numeracy Centre at Macquarie University (www.maths.mq.edu.au/numeracy/Courses.html) before commencement of the unit.
