SOC232: Theories of Modern Society
Students who want to major in sociology and those who seek to do honours are strongly advised to take this theory unit.
Modernity is characterised by a number of specific developments like democracy, capitalism, industrialism, nationalism, individualism and bureaucratisation. These are partially antagonistic, partially complementary tendencies. In this unit, we will examine these diverse trends through the prism of a range of classical theories of modern society. We consider from among the following: Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Freud.
