2009 Course Handbook

SOC366: Metropolitan Lifestyles: Sociology of the City

A large number of us live, work, shop, study, seek entertainment and leisure, and associate with each other, in metropolitan contexts. In this unit students will study both the classical sociological literature on the 'urban way of life', as well as more recent discussions of the post-modern or global metropolis. Throughout the unit we will use Sydney as our key empirical reference point, but will attempt to place these local urban dynamics in a comparative framework.
